What is this ‘Cotton & Clay’ I keep hearing about?

I have written my first blog post! Yay!

I have to be honest… the idea of writing a blog has been super daunting and reading all the “how to write a blog” articles left my head spinning…. and to be frank, even more confused about the do’s and don’ts of writing a blog.

So I have decided to just jump in and introduce myself and my little biz – Cotton & Clay. (And hopefully not break too many blog-writing rules haha)

I am a South African expat living in the “Coolest Little Capital in the World”, Wellington New Zealand. I moved here 3 years ago with my hubby and our two Scottish Terrier fur-kids, Murray and Maya. I am a bit of an introvert and tend to shy away from being in the spot-light (eeeek, I am writing a blog post – about myself – huge jump out of my comfort zone!!!!!)

Growing up, I remember how I would often accompany my mom (a very talented seamstress) to the fabric store to go buy ‘just a few things’ for her next project. More often than not, I would end up in one corner of the store guarding the haul of fabrics my mom had picked out, as she continued to hunt for more precious finds. Needless to say, she was in her happy place, but I didn’t particularly enjoy these outings. However I loved seeing how my mom would transform these pieces of fabric into beautiful clothes for the whole family.

I developed an appreciation of items that are handcrafted by someone who has put in so much care, love and passion into designing and creating it.

When we moved to New Zealand with only our fur-babies, suitcases and a few boxes, we started furnishing our home with a lot of pre-loved items. I discovered a love for refurbishing and…. (please tell me I’m not alone)…. a slight obsession with chalk paint πŸ™‚

The more I was working on transforming our home, the more I was seeking out creative and unique decor & accessories. Naturally I was drawn to the work of artisans who crafted products inspired by nature and the vibrant culture of my home country, South Africa.

I wanted to find a way to fill my home with these beautiful and inspiring items, but also share them with my friends in my new home country.

And so Cotton & Clay was born!

I have taken great care in sourcing products that are special and unique, yet functional and of the highest quality.

Most of these items have been sourced from (very talented) small artisans in South Africa, however I have discovered that New Zealand has some pretty awesome talent too!

So watch this space… there are some beautiful (locally crafted)Β goodies on the way to our site!

I have really fallen in love with all of the amazing products that I have sourced, and I hope you will too!
